About the Artist

A Little About Me

I've been drawing and painting since I was a kid. Though I didn't study formally, I've had lessons and classes from many wonderful artists over the years, starting at the Sanski Studio in my hometown of Haddonfield, NJ, learning oil painting with Edward Sanski and his son Albert. I also studied at the Markheim Arts Center in Haddonfield, mainly with noted portrait artist George Vail. I have also studied computer graphics at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, The Fleischer Art Memorial in Philadelphia and, farther afield, ink and calligraphy drawing at the Zen Mountain Monastery in Mt. Tremper, NY. More recently, the advent of the internet and its myriad resources have allowed me to study with artists around the country, as well as in England, France and Brazil.

I've also discovered that there's a great deal to learn simply by copying the work of artists whose work I admire.

After a hiatus of a few years to pursue other interests - notably acting in Philadelphia and Los Angeles - I returned to my Southern New Jersey roots and have begun painting more full-time, attempting to hone my craft and zero in on what it is about a subject that intrigues me. Sometimes it's an unexpected scene, or an object or still life that captures my attention. It may be that at this point in life (I was born on New Year's Day, 1949) I'm seeking out smaller moments in time, though a broad cloudscape intrigues me as well. I'm particularly drawn to scenes that have some emotional resonance for me, and I hope to pass those feelings along to viewers, in hopes that they'll find their own connection to my work.
